THE COUNTDOWN TO THE LOS ANGELES OLYMPIC GAMES HAS BEGUN
We've had a summer of sporting excellence on our television screens, and now the lacrosse community is fully focused on what the next four years has in store. Since 1896, once every four years (or three if we find ourselves in a global pandemic) the best athletes in over 30 sports and across more than 200 countries gather together to find out which individual or team is the most talented in their sport. Initially consisting of predominantly individual events, it wasn’t long before team sports such as hockey, basketball, volleyball and rugby sevens began to make appearances at the most prestigious sporting event on the planet: The Olympic Games.
After a brief appearance in the early 20th century, lacrosse was removed from the Olympics and has remained on the outskirts of the games as a mere observer of what could have been for over a century. Now, in just four years our sport will go from a bystander at these 2024 Olympics to centre stage in Los Angeles, California. Our home-grown athletes and coaches will be on television screens across the world, will be talked about in newspaper pages, and will be in with a chance of taking home an Olympic medal.
