FOUR WINNERS CROWNED AT BIG BUCS WEDNESDAY
On 19th March, university athletes from across England stormed the Loughborough University campus for the highly anticipated 2025 Big BUCS Wednesday. A showcase of elite university sport, the event - organised by BUCS - saw teams battle it out for championship glory across multiple disciplines, including volleyball, hockey, water polo, and, of course, lacrosse.
The action kicked off with the BUCS Trophy final, where Exeter Women’s 2s faced off against Durham Women’s 2s in a gripping contest. Both squads fought hard, but Exeter emerged victorious with an 11-8 win, securing the university’s first and only title of the day.
Later, all eyes turned to the Women’s Championship final, a much-hyped showdown between Exeter 1s and Nottingham 1s. Many expected a close encounter, but Nottingham had other ideas. They set the tone immediately, firing in the opening goal within the first minute and never looked back. By the final whistle, they had overwhelmed Exeter 12-3 to claim the title in emphatic fashion.
Over in the men’s competition, Manchester Met dominated Imperial in the Trophy final, proving just how dangerous a well-drilled team can be, even in a bracket where seasoned players share the field with those still finding their feet in the sport. An 11-1 rout left no doubt about Man Met’s superiority.
The day culminated in a blockbuster Men’s Championship final - a heated clash between Nottingham and Nottingham Trent. With both squads coached by England’s senior and U20 men’s head coaches, the stakes were sky-high, and the energy on the field matched the intensity of the crowd. Trent held off a fierce Nottingham side to seal a 12-9 victory, capping off an unforgettable day of university lacrosse.
