LACROSSE TALK MAGAZINE 35 YEARS ON
Picture February of 1990. Nelson Mandela was freed from prison, heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson was knocked out in Tokyo, The 49ers defeated the Broncos to win the Super Bowl, and the first issue of Lacrosse Talk magazine was published by the English Lacrosse Union. Having launched an interim issue in December of the previous year entitled “Crosse Talk”, feedback from readers prompted a name change to “Lacrosse Talk” as it was noted that it would not be immediately obvious to readers that the topic of the publication was the sport of lacrosse (something which we also had in mind when naming Creased, but purposefully decided against labelling it as a lacrosse magazine). Before the news and other forms of entertainment were readily available at our fingertips via smartphones and other tech devices, print media was a key way for communities to stay informed and engaged. This is no doubt a primary reason why the English Lacrosse Union and The All England Women’s Lacrosse Association decided to create a physical magazine, which ended up running until October of 2011.
The first Editor of Lacrosse Talk is noted as being Geoffrey Wilkinson, whose vision for the publication was to offer “a truly national magazine for all lacrosse” as outlined on the first issue’s opening page; and the publication did just that. From regional lacrosse to schools, and from pop lacrosse to international competitions, Lacrosse Talk covered a wide range of lacrosse-related topics which kept readers coming back for more.
